The public broadcaster confirmed the cuts Thursday, citing the loss of $500 million in annual federal funding that vanished in July.

PBS CEO Paula Kerger on Thursday expressed hope that some federal funding for public broadcasting could be restored in the next fiscal year.

PBS said it notified 34 staff members Thursday that they are losing their jobs. Congress cut more than $1 billion from PBS and NPR in July.
